Essential Documents Required for a Marriage Certificate

The marriage certificate is a vital document that you will want for a variety of reasons in order to confirm the legality of your marriage. The Indian government has made marriage certificates mandatory in order to combat issues such as child marriages and forced weddings, as well as to provide women equal rights in marriage. To get your marriage recorded, you must provide a list of papers needed by the registrar. After the paperwork have been verified, you will be given the wedding certificate.

  • Marriage registration application filled out completely and signed by both husband and wife

  • Identity documents for both parties, such as a passport/PAN/driving licence
  • Certificates of birth for the husband and couple
  • Permanent resident documentation for both parties, such as a voter ID or a driver’s licence, is required.
  • Affidavit of husband and wife issued by a notary public on 10 rs stamp paper with the following marital details:
  • Marriage took place on this date.
  • At the time of the wedding, age and marital status.
  • Confirmation that both parties are not related to the extent forbidden by the Hindu Marriage Act.
  • Both parties are citizens.
  • Religious beliefs of both parties.
  • If available, images of the wedding invitation or card
  • 2 passport-sized photographs of both parties.
  • Two photographs of both couples taken at the wedding ceremony and put on plain paper, together with the signature of any central/state government official whose identity can be verified. A person with Adhaar or PAN can also sign.
  • In the instance of a divorcee, a copy of the divorce papers. The death certificate is required in the event of the spouse’s death.
  • If the marriage has been organised in a religious location with rituals, the certificate from the priest or minister.
  • If a person is a foreign citizen, a letter from the relevant embassy confirming the husband/marital wife’s status is required.
  • If either of the parties are not Hindu, a conversion letter from a minister is required for registration under Hindu marriage.
  • The identification evidence of the witness who is required to appear at the registrar’s office on the designated day, as certified by a government/state official or anybody with an Adhaar card or PAN.
  • All documentation must be self-certified.

These are the essential paperwork for both parties, as well as the witnesses, in order to register the marriage. These documents must be brought to the appointment in order to be verified, and if the paperwork are complete, the marriage certificate is issued on the same day.
